Overview
Whether your period comes on time often reflects your overall health. In TCM theory, carrying extra weight is often associated with “Phlegm-Dampness” (痰湿), which is thought to obstruct the flow of Qi and Blood and be linked with changes in the menstrual cycle. If your cycle is persistently irregular, please see a doctor for a medical assessment first to rule out other causes.
Western and TCM Perspectives
Western Medicine View
Excess adipose tissue may influence hormone production and is associated with insulin resistance and imbalances in estrogen and progesterone, which can be linked with irregular ovulation and irregular cycles. Conditions such as PCOS are also relevant and need to be assessed by a doctor.
TCM Perspective
In TCM theory, menstrual regularity relates to the Spleen, Liver, Kidneys, and the Chong and Ren meridians. Being overweight is often linked with “Phlegm-Dampness,” which is traditionally thought to obstruct Qi flow and impede the circulation of menstrual blood.
Common Constitution Patterns in TCM Theory
TCM practitioners form a picture of a person’s overall condition through observation, listening, questioning and pulse-taking. The following are general theoretical associations only. They are not a diagnosis and should not be used for self-assessment:
Overweight + sticky discharge → often associated with “Phlegm-Dampness” in TCM theory The body’s ability to transform and transport fluids is thought to be affected.
Delayed periods + blood clots → often associated with “Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis” in TCM theory Qi is thought to be unable to move Blood smoothly through the channels.
Long-standing irregularity + backache → often associated with “Kidney Deficiency” in TCM theory Long-standing imbalance is thought to affect the reproductive Kidney system.
Traditional Approach
TCM takes a whole-body approach, aiming to support the regulatory function of the Chong and Ren meridians. Directions traditionally used include strengthening the Spleen and resolving Dampness, soothing the Liver and regulating Qi, invigorating Blood and regulating menstruation, and nourishing the Liver and Kidney.
How this is applied differs from person to person and should be determined by a registered TCM practitioner after a consultation. Please do not self-prescribe based on this article.

This article is general education and does not describe any individual prescription. Herbal medicine should only be used after assessment by a registered TCM practitioner.
Everyday Lifestyle Tips
- Keep a regular sleep routine and avoid habitual late nights
- Eat a light, balanced diet and limit greasy or very sweet foods
- Stay moderately active to help maintain a healthy weight
- If your cycle stays irregular, your flow changes noticeably, or you have significant discomfort, please seek medical care
Key Takeaways
Menstrual irregularity usually reflects whole-body balance rather than an isolated organ problem. TCM theory emphasises attending to constitution and lifestyle together, with the aim of supporting the body’s own rhythm. Individual results may vary depending on constitution, circumstances, and how closely someone follows the advice.
